7.1.3

QlM

Describe the facilities in the Institution for the management of the following types of degradable and non-degradable waste

  • The institute has successfully adopted a well-developed waste management system for greater efficiency and sustainability.  Following are the key steps performed for waste management:

●        Solid Waste Management

Different garbage collecting bins have been placed at various locations for solid waste management. Waste disposal is done by NKDA on a daily basis. It is also ensured that all of these components are recycled at lowest possible cost and with least amount of effort.

●        Liquid Waste Management

❖       Wastewater and sewage treatment follows the aerobic sewage treatment technique. Waste-water is treated and used in the gardening process.

❖       Rainwater harvesting is also practiced, which involves collecting and storing rainwater for later use. Rain water harvesting is one of the most effective methods of water management and water conservation. It involves collection and storage of rain water at surface or in subsurface aquifer, before it is lost as surface run-off.

❖       The resource can be harvested in the time of need. Artificial recharge to ground water is a process by which the ground water reservoir is augmented at a rate exceeding that of natural conditions of replenishment.

❖       The collected water is stored and pumped in a separate pipe distribution. This is a very useful method for a developing country like India in reducing the cost and the demand of treated water and also economizing the treatment plants operation, maintenance and distribution costs.

❖       The Institute has provisions for storing rain water and utilizing it in times of need.

●        E-waste Management

❖       E-Waste management is a critical consideration for future generations as proper e-waste recycling is becoming hard to find, with very less efficient recyclers in the business. E-Waste is not a problem going away soon. In fact with the alarming rise in the use of electronics and electrical products the volume is only going to rise.

❖       Defective electronic devices are repaired to guarantee that they can be utilized further.

❖       E-waste is safely disposed of in collaboration with Hulladek Recycling Pvt. Ltd. as per state government guidelines.

❖       The Institute recycles its e-waste every six months.

❖       IEM is certified for the ethical collection and channelization of E-waste

2019-2020 2020-2021 2021-2022
486Kg 522 Kg 1344.26Kg

❖       We also have collectively developed a collection mechanism along with an external Agency.

❖       They are offering us for end-to-end recycling of all collected and handed-over electronic and electric waste (e-waste).

❖       Any of our electronics waste generated is collected in the respective department and after combining sent to E-Waste management facility.

●        Waste recycling system

Waste-water after the purification process is used for gardening. Paper-waste is recycled and e-waste is disposed of in a proper way.

●        Hazardous chemicals waste management :

Firstly, in the lab we use very dilute solutions.

Secondly, we never discard the chemicals/solutions directly to the basin/environment. Rather, we use a neutralization pit into which the students discard solutions which are mostly slightly acidic or alkaline, as and when they need. And later on we make the solutions/chemicals neutralized and then we dispose of it from the neutralization pit.

Campus is free of hazardous chemicals and radioactive waste.
